Junior Rugby

Junior rugby is the lifeblood of the Pirongia Rugby and Sports Club, with around 200 young players pulling on the black and white hoops each season – from Ripper Rugby ( 4yrs old ) right through to 13th Grade.

Our junior club is run by passionate volunteers who love the game and the positive impact it has on young people. While we teach rugby skills, our bigger focus is helping kids build confidence, create friendships, and feel a strong sense of belonging within our club and community.

We welcome all players — any age, any level. Whether your child has played for years or is keen to give rugby a go for the first time, there is a place for them at Pirongia. We are proud to be a fully inclusive club, with teams ranging from ripper (6th and 7th grade) tag rugby, including several ‘all-girl’ teams, through to mixed rugby for the older grades.

Teaching the right techniques from the start is a key focus, with player safety always paramount. Our coaches attend coaching workshops and development sessions to ensure they are equipped with the latest knowledge around safe play, skill development, and creating a positive environment for young players.

Our ripper grades play within the Te Awamutu Sub Union, giving kids the opportunity to compete locally and build connections with players from neighbouring communities. As players move into the older grades, they compete in the Waikato-wide competitions, allowing them to experience a broader level of competition and further develop their skills.

The junior rugby season runs from April through to late August, with games played on Saturday mornings throughout the region.

It’s never too late to join.
